Light Prop for an Electric Stage # 2

Large LED displays and network communications offer exciting new possibilities for the display/presentation of media art because they are large and bright enough to be prominent in public spaces, even in bright daylight. In contrast, projected images lose brightness and definition as they are enlarged and are not bright enough for daytime use.

In partnership with Peter Cornwell, Professor of computing science and media art; teaching at institutions such as Imperial College, London, the Royal Academy of Arts and the University of Applied Arts, Vienna and formally director of the Institute for Visual Media, ZKM, Germany, BLIP and Element Labs, The National Glass Centre, and mesmar, a series of new commissioned were produced were curated by Keith Whittle and Peter Cornwell specifically for LED. The commissioned works were shown throughout December including new works by internationally respected media art duo 8gg: Beijing, /sLab Artists in Residence, supported by Visiting Arts, Winter 2006, Susan Collins, Slade School of Art and Design, Flunk, Eric Bainbridge, James Hutchinson and Claire Davies. Artists from around the world were also invited to submit works directly to the LED display via the installation web site.

Capri

Capri by Lothar Goetz was a one-night event at Galley’s Gill in Sunderland using coloured light.

Responding to existing landscape architecture Capri revitalised and highlighted the initial Landscape Architect’s idea of a social space on the Wearside riverbank. In his work Lothar Goetz usually reacts with colour on a given architectural situation, using paint applied directly onto walls but if appropriate using coloured materials such as vinyl, glass, fabrics or light. Working with existing surroundings colour is used to create abstract spaces that blur the boundaries between the dream world and fact, challenging our perception of what is reality.

Cargo

2 shipping containers become a hub for artists film and video in the winter of 2006. A whole lot a stress getting this off-site project off the ground (or is that on the ground), but once in situ it all worked to dazzling effect.
